The 9-Step Guide to Dressing Like an English Gentleman

By...bny
Ask a woman to name her ideal man, and she'll likely exhale a breathy "Mr. Darcy." Indeed, the dapper Englishman is a permanent fixture in most female fantasies. And yet, his signature look is difficult to perfect. Luckily, we can show you how to make any woman swoon.

1. Suspenders

Aside from aesthetic pleasures, these babies have a lot of practical benefits. They're more comfortable than belts, they beautifully outline the curve of one's back, and they hold up the trousers so as to sculpt the rear end and generously cover any extra belly bulge. The bonus is that slipping them casually off your shoulder is a pretty suave move at the end of any night.

2. The Waistcoat

Nothing is quite as slimming or as dapper as a well-tailored waistcoat. Again, here, a good fit is crucial. It should be snug at the shoulders without pulling in the back or front. Buttons are hot. Buttons are your friend. You can leave the last one undone to facilitate arm-raising (and to follow tradition: legend has it that King Edward VII always neglected to fasten the lower button because he was too fat and so the custom was widely adopted by the public), but the others must always be securely fastened, even on a hot day.

3. High-Waisted Pants

The Regency Dandy was really born with riding breeches that provocatively outlined his slim, muscular legs. A true period pair would come with a flap open topwhich, while convenient, would thoroughly wig a girl out now. Cream is the classic color but size is really key here. They should be form-fitting around the calves but loose around the groin so as to not give a lady the wrong impression. And if you're not that confident about your leg area, a pair of high-waisted gray or pinstripe slim straight trousers do nicely as well.

4. Oxford Brogues

Footwear-wise, nothing says English gentleman more than a pair of brogues. Back in the day, they were only considered appropriate to wear in the country, because the decorative perforations in the side allowed water to drain, which is quite convenient when hunting over wet terrain. Nowadays, they make for a stylish and practical shoe when running through a soggy city.
There are several variations, the most classic one being the full Oxford brogue.

5. The Cravat

A cravat is basically a really fat tie, not to be confused with an Ascot tie, which is a narrow neckband with wide pointed wings. It's a pain in the ass to put around your neck. Invest in silk. There's nothing quite as erotic as a soft, sleek tie for a woman's fingertips.
You can also ditch the cravat and go with a scarf, but then you have to do it Benedict Cumberbatch style, aka throw around your neck in a way that seems fashionanbly messy when it's actually very precisely calculated.

6. The Cuff-Links

This may seem like a small, unnecessarily expensive detail, but it's not. The glint of a gold cufflink immediately sends signals of "Money, Power, Class," through a woman's mind. It also lets people know that you are finely-groomed, an essential characteristic of any dreamy Englishman.Cuff-links can also be fun because they're one of the few pieces of men's jewelry that comes in so many different options, so there are lots of opportunities to choose a pair that expresses your unique interests and taste.

7. The Shaving Kit

Nothing says British gent like a fine shaving brush. But they're not just for show: the soft bristles mixed with cream or soap creates a thick lather and, subsequently, a perfectly clean shave. The proper after-shave imbues your chin with a musky, sandalwood scent, which is important because women really notice how a man's face smells. With proper care, these kits can even be passed down to generations. That's ultimate grandpa swag.

8. The Other Accessories

The devil is all in the details, and the dreamy Englishman is nothing if not devilish. There are plenty of other small items to complete your appearance. An antique gold-watch. A brass Governor Cane. A hook umbrella. A top hat (to be worn only to white-tie events or other occasions in which woman also wear comically large hats). If circumstances permit, a horse. Just remember to wear any one of these items sparingly and never ever all at once so as to avoid accidentally looking like a Ghost Tour guide.

9. Perfect the brood

So much of being a dreamy Englishman lies in the diffident demeanor, so be sure to test your ability to glower handsomely across the room while brooding in the corner. Remember that expressions of emotion must be as stiff and awkward as humanly possible (probably best to avoid entirely), while confessions of love are to be as overly complicated and long-winded as possible. A Dreamy Englishman is all action and very little talk. And, most importantly, he is always kind and immensely considerate. So, go forth, and swag responsibly!
And remember, if all else fails: put on a white collared shirt, add water. Works. Every Time.

How to dress like a Gentleman – Our Top 10 Tips

15th February 2017

Dressing to impress is not as easy as it sounds as there are certain things you should wear and specific ways in which you should wear them too. Unsure about how to tie a tie the right way? Maybe you need some advice on how to wear your shirt or trousers correctly. Well, worry no more because Savile Row are here to help as we are about to reveal our top 10 tips on how to dress like a gentleman.

1. Get the correct suit size (know your measurements)

Before you purchase a suit, it’s very important to measure yourself to ensure that it fits you perfectly. You must make sure that the jackets’ shoulders are neither too big nor too small, and that the sleeves are comfortable for you when you lift your arms up (too tight and it puts undue pressure on the seams) No one wants a jacket that’s too long or too short for them, do they? You can avoid this by doing the following things when you try it on; start by relaxing your arms down by your side, then curl your fingers round the hem , the jacket should come to rest right in the crevice your fingers have made. You’ll know that the jacket is too long if it bunches up and too short if it doesn’t reach the crevice.

2. Wear your suit and don’t let it wear you

Having your pockets bulging with too many bulky items distorts the fabrics and puts unnecessary wear on your suit. This isn’t a good look if you’re trying to dress like a gentleman as it takes away the style and class. We’re not saying that you need to leave your valuables at home as that would be ridiculous, but it’s all about knowing where to store it all. Take any unnecessary items out of your wallet to make it thinner and then place it in one of your breast pockets. Your mobile phone can go in the other breast pocket and any other small items such as keys can go in your inside pockets. Don’t carry unnecessary keys as these can be really bulky. Whatever you do, don’t let your suit wear you!

3. Jacket buttons

Do you get confused about which buttons you should do up and which ones you should leave undone on your jacket? Doing the wrong buttons up is an easy mistake to make so we are going to put an end to the mix-up for you now. If your jacket has three buttons, the middle one should always be buttoned up and the bottom one should never be buttoned up. The top one doesn’t have to be done up but we advise that you do. However, if your jacket has two buttons, you must wear only the top button done up. Finally only unbutton it when you sit down.

3

4. Get the length of your trouser just right

It’s quite simple really. All you need to do is check that they cover half of the shoe at the back. Ankle swingers aren’t the best look and neither are trousers that drag along the floor so by checking that they come down to the right place on your shoe, your trousers will be the perfect length.

4

5. Learn how to wear your shirt correctly

Now that you know how to get the length of your trousers right, it’s time to move onto your shirt. There’s a bit more to this so take careful note. Firstly, the sleeve cuff should cover the wrist reaching the bottom of the thumb and when worn with a jacket, you should be able to see at least half an inch of shirt cuff below the jacket wrist. Added onto that, the tips of the collar should sit against the body of the shirt. Lastly, always remember that a good quality shirt will last many washes, often getting better over time so choose wisely.

5

6. A tie

Ties are great way of representing how you’re feeling that day and you can be as bold, colourful and as crazy as you like with them. When picking out a tie for yourself, it’s important to check the quality of it first and the best way of doing this is to handle it. Feeling the material will give you a good idea of the quality and lining used which all contributes to how it will knot. When knotted, the tip of your tie should be in the middle of your belt and it should be pulled tight so that there is no gap at the top where the tie meets the collar opening. The most commonly used knot is the four-in-hand style as it suits most collar shapes and is relatively easy to knot. Why don’t you add a special touch by putting a small dimple in it? – it will give it more style and class.

6

7. Pay attention to detail

This is the secret into looking your best. Try adding a pocket square to complete your outfit. If you want to go that extra mile, a silver tie pin will contribute perfectly to your classy, sophisticated look.

8. Go for Good quality

Good quality clothes not only look much better, but they will also last much longer. If you invest in clothes that are of a high quality, over time, you will bring together a wardrobe that is individual to you.

8

9. Shoes & Socks

The shoes you wear with a suit should be brogue or semi-brogue and must be polished with real shoe polish every day to make them as shiny as possible (almost to military standards). You shouldn’t wear them for 2 days running and we advise that you put shoe trees in to keep the shape at the end of each day. In terms of the socks that you wear, you must ensure that they’re not too loud but also make sure that they match the trouser colour and not the shoe colour. Finally, you need to have them long enough so that you don’t show any leg.

9

10. Care

There’s nothing worse than a creased shirt that has lost its colour so make sure you know your clothing care symbols. Note; if it says Dry Clean only it is done for a very good reason. Your clothes should always be clean and pressed in order to present yourself in the best way possible.

Are you ready to become a more vibrant, memorable, and attractive person? Are you ready to build your charisma and create strong relationships with others who generally enjoy your company? Stop thinking you are boring or unattractive and take proactive steps to improve your own self-confidence and gain a greater appreciation in the eyes of others.

  1. Image titled Be Attractive Step 1
    1
Embrace a healthy lifestyle. A healthy body is very often considered an attractive trait. This doesn't mean you need to become a body builder or marathon runner. Start by making basic healthy decisions in your everyday life, and take it from there. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle can demonstrate maturity and responsibility, which are attractive traits to a potential mate.[1]
    • Studies show that 12% body fat in men, and 20% body fat in women is a good goal to strive for. In men, a 12% body fat ratio increases testosterone levels and boosts immune system.[2]
    • Women have more body fat than men, and at a 20% ratio, a women's curves are more defined.
    • Eating more fruits and vegetables is a great way to become more vibrant while you diet. Fruits and vegetables are loaded with antioxidants and plant-based pigments, which give skin a healthy glow.
  2. Image titled Be Attractive Step 2
    2
Get your beauty sleep. No matter how groomed you are, or how much make-up you wear, studies have shown that sleep deprived people look less healthy, more tired, and overall less attractive.
    • Aim to get 8 hours of sleep each night to fight off red eyes, and other symptoms of sleep deprivation.
  3. Image titled Be Attractive Step 3
    3
Keep yourself well groomed. Showers solve most problems. Brush and floss your teeth regularly. Comb your hair. Get regular haircuts. Keep your nails clean. Smell nice. Scent is a strong influencer on attractiveness. Personal hygiene is very important.
  4. Image titled Be Attractive Step 4
    4
Find your center. Health is a huge contributor to overall attractiveness. You will automatically look more attractive if you look both emotionally and physically healthy.[3] In addition to your diet and exercise, meditation is a powerful tool to relax your mind, lower stress hormones, improve you mood, and clear your skin.
    • Whether it's meditation (focus on your breath), mindfulness (focus on the now), or just paying attention to what is happening in the present moment, these practices will lead you to embody a sense of calm and ease.
    • It's a slight shift with a big impact. Train yourself to be here now and watch how others respond to your aura of grace.

Part2
Attracting Through Body Language

  1. Image titled Be Attractive Step 5
    1
Stand with an open torso.[4] Be attractive in your body language. Open body language can be more attractive than any outfit. You can use your body language to convey availability and attractiveness.
    • Don’t cross your arms, don’t check your phone in front of your chest, and don’t hug your purse or hold your glass of wine at your canter. Each of these can convey a closed off, unavailable person.
  2. Image titled Be Attractive Step 6
    2
Show your hands. Generally, when we can’t see someone’s hands, we have difficulty in trusting them. Research shows that a person’s most attractive trait is their availability.[5] When you are socializing, show people that you want to connect with them by keeping your posture open and available.
    • Don’t put your hands in your pockets, under the table, or in your coat. People may be less likely to open up to you if they can't see your hands.
  3. Image titled Be Attractive Step 7
    3
Smile. It's incredible how important, yet simple this one is. When we smile, we automatically become more approachable, more interesting, and friendlier. Smiling is a huge tool in attractiveness.[6]
    • Smile at people you see, most of them will smile back.
  4. Image titled Be Attractive Step 8
    4
Maintain eye contact. Good eye contact can communicate more than words. Through eye contact you can express that you are engaged, listening, and in the present. You can show that you care about the individual you are looking at.
    • Avoid looking down or shifting your gaze. This can show that you are uninterested.
    • Sometimes too much eye contact can come off as creepy or weird. Practice holding eye contact for a second longer than you normally would and focus on something, like the color of the persons eyes. This kind of eye contact is more personable.
  5. Image titled Be Attractive Step 9
    5
Dress to impress. Wear clothes that fit you well and flatter your figure. Studies have shown that wearing red can increase your attractiveness to a potential mate.[7]
    • Ladies, put on a red dress or wear a little red lipstick.
    • Men who grow a light beard are considered more attractive to some. If you grow facial hair, be sure to keep it well groomed.[8]
  6. Image titled Be Attractive Step 10
    6
Stand tall. Keep your head up and your eyes forward. By walking with a confident stance, you will begin to feel more comfortable within yourself.[9] This is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to become more attractive. Simply stand a little taller.

Part3
Socializing

  1. Image titled Be Attractive Step 11
    1
Listen first. Encourage others to talk about themselves. Shine the spotlight on them. Give them your full attention and appreciation by focusing only on them. When we let people talk about themselves, it triggers pleasure responses in their brain.[10]
    • Put your stuff away. Don't check your phone. Don't glance at your monitor. Don't focus on anything else, even for a moment.
  2. Image titled Be Attractive Step 12
    2
Respond with questions. Ask them about positive things in their life. When they reply, ask them how they are feeling about life in general. Since you’ve already gotten a positive answer to the first question, you are more likely to get a positive answer to the second one, leading to a positive overall experience with you.
    • Become memorable and attractive through the way you let them express themselves to you.
  3. Image titled Be Attractive Step 13
    3
Select your words carefully. The words you use can have a huge impact on how you come across to others.[11] Avoid being negative as much as possible. Prioritize positive words over negative ones. We all associate happy, enthusiastic, and fulfilled people with attractiveness. Say things like:
    • "I believe in you." These four short words can have a huge impact on how people feel both about themselves and about you.
    • "How can I help?" Offering assistance doesn't mean you have to go out of your way to help some, but often we cannot accomplish things alone. Saying this will show someone you are an ally.
    • "Here's what's happening." No one wants to be left out. If you make an effort to include everyone, they will associate a positive connection with you. Share the information you have to become more likable. You can also use this phrase to demonstrate decisiveness in a positive way.
    • "I'll find out."
    • "You're welcome." Somewhere down the road we stopped saying, "You're welcome" and started saying "yep," and "no problem." Saying the former establishes that you have done a worthwhile favor, whereas the latter shows that what you have done was insignificant. Use the former to show a person how much you care.
  4. Image titled Be Attractive Step 14
    4
Be playful. Laugh easily. Playfulness, as a personality trait can bring a bunch of positivity to your life and the lives of others. Not only can playfulness help reduce stress levels, but it will also help you appear more confident and comfortable.
    • Take care to tease lightly and play close attention to the other people around you. No matter what your intentions, playfulness isn't attractive if you end up hurting someone's feelings.
    • There is a time and place for playfulness. If you are in a professional environment, where playfulness is generally not encourages, save it for when you leave work. However, you can still exercise kindness and warmth.
  5. Image titled Be Attractive Step 15
    5
Speak slower. Slowing down your speech can actually make you more interesting to others. This gives them a chance to digest what you are saying. Speaking slower also demonstrates confidences and a relaxed state, while speaking quickly might make you look overly excited, eager, or nervous.
    • Especially if you are nervous, practice speaking slow. This will help you remain calm, and maintain control.
    • You are also less likely to stumble over your words if you speak slowly.
